Our current selection, The Women of the Copper Country by Mary Doria Russell, takes place in the Upper Peninsula mining town of Calumet, Michigan. It's 1913, and men are risking their lives in the mines for meager wages. Women are working in the homes of the elite and worrying that they may receive a fateful call telling them that their husbands or sons may not be coming home. Against this backdrop, twenty-five-year-old Annie decides to stand up for the entire town of Calumet, yet many townspeople wonder if she can handle the challenge. Purchase a copy of the book or pick it up at the library (dependent on availability). Read the book by Wed., May 8, and join us that evening at 7 p.m. for dessert and discussion of this month's selection. Sign up on the kiosk or Sign Up Genius to let us know you're participating.
